İsdemir who is the one of industrial locomotive of Turkey and for many years produced long manufacture, started to produce flat steel. Till 2002 it’s aftermath was in doubt and it demaged Turkey’s economy, but the hard works of last managing director before the privatization, İsdemir was saved from the deficiency and even it moved into profit. It attend Oyak Group in the privatization process and the investments accelerated. In the scope of modernization and transilience, 40 projects are started, 27 facilities are commissioned, 3 facilities are partially commissioned and in 10 facilities, the operations are still continuing. In the scope of the projects, in the Hot Rolling Mill Facility with the capacity of 3,5 million tons/year, the montage and the tests are completed and the 2nd of August, the first bobbin is produced. Oyak Group bought Erdemir the amount of 3 billion 100 million USD, and after this purchasing, Oyak Group spend 3 billion USD to Isdemir for producing flat steel. This investment is appraised that the biggest investment of the history of republic. The most important condition of agreement that purchasing Erdemir was, production of flat steel in İskenderun with the capacity of 3.5 million tons/year till t the end of 2008. Oyak accomplished this.
200 contractors worked for Isdemir
In this project 200 contractor company were assigned. In some periods, the number of employee is passed over 17.000. So that, the investment is completed in a short time.
Worked with International Companies
In the scope of agreement that signed with Marubeni/ Mitsubishi- Hitachi/ Siemens consortium, the last technology is used for high quality. The hot rolling mill facility that provide to produce the sheet iron between 700-2.050 mm. ampleness and between 1,2-22 mm thickness. In the facility, there are 2 slab heating furnace that the capacity of 400 tons/hour, 1 cogging mill, bobbin box, 6 footed band rolling mill and 2 bobbin winder. Beside these there is the electrical automation system in the facility.
Flat Steel Production and Oyak Organisation
Oyak Group organized a meeting between 9-11 October of 2008 to share this investment and to celebrate this. In 9th of October, in Antalya Port the organization was started. The important media organs from abroad and domestic and Oyak Groups’ employees attended the organization. We attended too in the organization as Demir Çelik Store Magazine. The travel between Antalya and Iskenderun was very blissful. The ship was very comfortable for the participants. When we approach the Isdemir Port an excited group and the band of metropolitan municipality met us. After that we started the news conference. In the meeting, the retired Lieutenant General Yıldırım Türker, the member of board retired governor Ömer Lütfi Tuncel, the old Rector of Ankara University Prof. Dr. Necdet Serin, member of board İsdemir Celaleddin Çağlar, Oyak Director General Dr. Coşkun Ulusoy, Erdemir General Director Oğuz Özgen, Isdemir Director General İsmail Akçakmak, Erenco Director General İlhami Acar and the other senior managers attended the news conference.
Coşkun Ulusoy answered criticism after 1 year
After Yıldırım Türker’s speech, Oyak Groups’ successful executive director Dr. Coşkun Ulusoy told the investments of iron & steel sectors. He shared the reasons of selling Oyakbank and he examined the global economical crisis. He explained that, the global economical crisis alerted for many years and because of the crisis they decided to sell Oyakbank. Coşkun Ulusoy said that, the crisis will become much deeper. He said “there were many people that animadverted us because of selling Oyak Bank but the global economical crisis showed that we are right”.
If we find 36.000 $ bank, we will purchase again
“If we are still administrating the bank today, we could not be cheery and I could not feel so comfort. Today, all of the world agonize the bank that broke down but we look confidently to the future. In consequence, we are investment fund. We fulfilled the requirements of the fund. If we find a bank that worth 36,000 $, we will buy again. After 5 years we will sell the bank again. I think the decision of selling the bank is most suitable decision” said Coşkun Ulusoy.
Erdemir is financing itself
Ulusoy said“The idea of purchasing Erdemir was true. When we sold the bank, one of the criticism was the source necessity. We alienated the association that we aren’t specialized and we acquired cash money. Even someone dared that; we sell the bank because of the accommodations of Erdemir. Erdemir is financing itself. We have gotten loan for 10 years for Erdemir. Actually Oyakbank didn’t pay any money for Erdemir”.
“We invested 3 billion USD to Turk Iron & Steel Sector”
“Erdemir Group is one of the biggest industrial investment of history of republic” said Coşkun Ulusoy and he added that “In this global economical crisis, we can actualize this growt, I think this is very important point. The way was not easy. We didn’t complete our investments. In our fabrics the investments will not complete. We invested almost 2,5 billion USD. The liquid steel capacity of Isdemir will reach 5.3 million tons, and flat steel capacity of Isdemir will reach 3.5 million tons. We will be the biggest manufacturer of steel. The liquid steel capacity of Erdemir will 9 million tons”.
“We will go abroad the second half of 2009 or in 2010 ”
“The global economical crisis isn’t go downhill yet, the fluctuations will be continuing 2009 and 2010. In abroad the prices are not go downhill yet. Today, European Exchanges decrease 10. This means that Europe become cheap 10. In 2009 I think the prices will bottom out and this means that we will buy a company from the abroad. There is a war in the world in terms of buying raw materials. We don’t want to be a side of failed in this war” said Ulusoy.
Akçakmak affected
İsmail Akçakmak -the director general of Isdemir gave information about the flat steel investment and he mentioned the geopolitical importance and the details of the investments of Isdemir. At one time Isdemir was in stage of bankrupt and today it is the centre of iron & steel.
We are the 2nd country that improved fast
The director general and board member of Erdemir Oğuz Özgen said that “China’s speed-up is 15.7 and Turkey’s speed-up is 10.7. So Turkey become the 2nd country that improve fast. China’s improvement is unable to retort 20. The rivals attack to be strong and the alliances are continuing. Turkey slams China in terms of consumption per capita. China has 307 kg in consumption per capita and Turkey has 314 kg in consumption per capita.
The succeed of Turkish Engineers
The director general of Erenco İlhami Acar said that “The 3 billions USD investment of İsdemir is the succeed of Turkish Engineers”. He mentioned that many stages were completed included bringing water from Aslantaş Barrage.
We ambulated Isdemir and found opportunity to examine the investments
After the news conference, the media organs were ambulated in the facility of Isdemir. With the leadership of deputy director General of Isdemir Uğur Yılmaz first of all we saw steelworks, after that we saw blast furnace. Right after we entered hot rolling mill that 800 meter. We saw the slab entrance into the furnace, elixation, milling and becoming a bobbin. After these we saw the production stages of the slabs. We got around the stock fields. We were proud while we were getting around the facility and we understood that, Oyak is belong to all of us.
Isdemir has 8,6 million m2 settlement and it includes the plant and the social facility. It has the advantages that expressway, railway, port and settlement so, it is open for improvements. About 9,000 people live in Isdemir boardings. In Isdemir constitution there are 2.418 boardings, 59 suite, 100 bedstead guesthouse, culture centre (library, cinema, chess club and internet salon), restaurants, beach facilities and tea garden, 61 business offices, 2 big shopping center, 1 gym, 2 swimming pools, 4 football fields, football field carpet, 2 open basketball fields, 1 open volleyball field and two open tennis court. We had opportunity to bat around some parts of these facilities. After the excursion the facility, we had dinner in Isdemir Mevlana Restaurant and then we went to Isdemir beach facilities. All details were accounted for convenience of the press members. We converse with Oyak Directors. All of them were warm blooded.
The aperture of flat steel will be declined
The flat steel aperture will be declined when Isdemir start to produce flat steel. There will be decline the aperture of flat steel so current account deficit will be declined. I anticipate that there will be important development in the region of Iskenderun. Already now the lands are snapped up.
